Britain’s first chain of pizza restaurants arrived in 1965 when Pizza Express opened their first restaurant in London. Since then, the UK’s pizza industry has boomed and this easy-easy-to eat calorific treat is a firm favourite with people of all ages. In 2017/2018, an average of 87 grams of pizza was consumed per person each week. Widely available in supermarkets, at restaurants and from a huge number of takeaway outlets across the UK, it’s one of the most popular purchased dishes.
Skipton is home to some absolutely superb independent restaurants serving all kinds of cuisines. When looking for mass-produced dishes such as pizza, it is often the big brands and the larger chains which we think of first. However, local independent restaurants often create pizzas which are equally as good, if not better and there has never been a more important time to support local businesses.
In this article, we’re looking at the restaurants in Skipton that are known for serving great pizzas. So, if you have a penchant for pizza or you’re craving a calzone, you know exactly which restaurants to consider…
Oakley’s is a relaxed dining restaurant serving burgers, salads, grills and of course, pizzas! This place is super family-friendly and they’ve built up a solid customer base of local families who choose this restaurant for birthdays and other celebrations. Reasonably priced with an extensive menu to choose from, Oakleys is certainly one of Skipton’s most visited restaurants. If you dine between 4pm and 5pm, kids can eat for just £2 if accompanied by a paying adult.
They have 14 varieties of pizza on their menu, priced between £9.50 and £12.95 but it’s their calzones which they are truly known for. Served with a bowl of hot ragu sauce, bolognese or beef chilli, they’re huge and they’re jam-packed with meat!
Skipton’s very own pirate-themed restaurant is a great choice for large celebrations or eating out with kids. Their extensive menu is bursting with delicious Tex Mex as well as a few unexpected surprises. If spice is your thing then these guys won’t disappoint. Their Enchiladas, Chimichangas, Burritos and Fajitas always go down a treat but they also offer a great selection of pizzas.
Their rather large and super tasty pizzas are priced from just £8.50 and include toppings which are fitting with the overall theme of the restaurant. We recommend the ‘The Spiced’ which is generously topped with Chorizo, Hungarian Sausage, Beef Chilli and Cajun Spices. Perfect washed down with one of their amazing Margarita cocktails!
This Turkish restaurant on Skipton High Street hasn’t been open for very long but it’s already incredibly popular with locals. Their menu of authentic cuisine is much talked about at the moment and includes hot and cold mezes and traditional mains such as Stuffed Aubergine, kebabs and grilled meats. They also have a lovely selection of Pide which is a Turkish version of pizza.
Baked in their bread oven and full of flavour, these traditional Turkish pizzas are a must-try. The Kiymali Yumurtali Pide is topped with marinated lamb mince, onions, peppers, parsley, tomato and an egg. Yummy! Prices for pide at Laylak Restaurant range from £11.95 to £13.95.
Brody’s @ Sheep Street Social
This family-run independent restaurant and bar serves a great range of authentic Italian cuisine made using locally sourced ingredients. Their menu includes some stunning pasta dishes and tasty tapas but it’s their fantastic pizzas which really steal the show. All their pizza bases are stretched out daily and they use fine quality ingredients to create their homemade tomato sauce.
The 12″ Neapolitan pizzas are priced between £9.90 (Margherita) and £14.90 ( Salami. Spicy Chorizo, Mushrooms, Peppers, Pineapples, Olives, Red Onion). Pizzas from Brody’s are also available to take away and they offer a free delivery service on Friday nights.
Alexander’s at the top of the High Street is currently running a ‘Pizza and Prosecco’ offer every Thursday and Friday. Available between 5 pm and 7 pm, you can enjoy a tasty sourdough pizza and a glass of prosecco for £15 pp. There are 4 varieties available including a traditional Margherita with Fresh Basil and the delicious-sounding Spicy Chorizo, Chilli and Peppers pizza.
These are also available on their All Day Dining menu and are priced from £10 to £12 each. If you’re lucky with the weather, we recommend enjoying these pizzas on their lovely terrace dining area.
