You have probably noticed that during lockdown, a number of businesses have been displaying some incredibly creative chalkboard art and felt pen window messages. The man behind these is the very lovely, Dean Majors. Well known in the town for his friendly personality, good heart and wide range of skills, Dean has been brightening up shop fronts with colourful signs and positive messages for a number of weeks. His striking work can be found outside some of Skipton’s most popular independent bars and restaurants, reminding locals of changes to services or simply to spread a bit of positivity during what has been a deeply worrying period for our independent businesses.
Earlier this week, we spoke to Dean to find out more about his work and his reasons for offering this wonderful service. Here’s what he had to say…
“I started whilst at catering college, doing my work placements boards in old fashion chalk. My background in the pub and restaurant trade took me all over the country and the boards became a part of my life. I couldn’t walk past a pub without asking if I could tidy up their board!
“I used to get lunch or a few pints for my work, so that was lovely. I’m very lucky that I know a lot of people in Skipton, and as I work primarily at V.SQ and Sound Bar, these are great shop windows for my art. When I qualified as a massage therapist, I opened up a new client base for the boards, as florists, hair salons and shops would call me for a little spruce up.
“When lockdown hit, I felt for everyone, and knowing their businesses would be empty I contacted them and asked if I could spread the love. To start with it was all about staying safe and letting customers know they were missed! Many of my recipients of art stayed open during, but had to adapt, so I would pop in whenever I was passing just to do any changes.
“Local business is going to take a long time to recover, and I am in a position to be able to just make that little bit of a difference to how their boards and windows look. I love Skipton, its people and its passion and it’s an absolute pleasure to give back to a town that’s made me feel so grateful.
“Good friends at Le Bistro, Le Caveau, V.SQ, Sound Bar, Oakleys, Skipton Farmers Market, Luxe Clinic, Alexander’s, Craven Bakery and Aaghrar have all felt the love of a good felt pen!
“The CHALKMASTER understands that advertising is expensive, and as I work full time, I do this in my bit of spare time. I only charge for my materials and a bit for time.
“If ANYONE with a local business needs a visit, just pop the kettle on (black, no sugar) and leave it to me…”
