With the UK’s hospitality sector having been given the green light to reopen after lockdown, many of us are frantically planning our next short break or family holiday. Skipton is a thriving tourist town with plenty to offer people of all ages. This historic Yorkshire market town is ideally situated close to some of Yorkshire’s most popular tourist spots. Places like Leeds, York, Harrogate, Haworth, Bolton Abbey and Ilkley are all easily accessible via car or public transport. However, with so much do see and do in the pretty town of Skipton, travelling further afield is by no means essential.
Known as the “Gateway to The Dales”, Skipton is surrounded by some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful countryside, making it the ideal base for walkers and explorers. The town itself boasts a wonderfully preserved Norman castle, a picturesque canal basin, an award-winning market, a superb array of independent shops and some pretty excellent pubs, restaurants and bars.
As it’s a popular tourist town which attracts tens of thousands of visitors during peak seasons, there is no shortage of places to stay in Skipton. Independent hotels, homely B&Bs, traditional inns and pretty self-catering cottages are scattered in and around Skipton. To help you decide where to stay during your visit to this wonderful North Yorkshire town, we’ve put together a list of some of our favourites. Each has an excellent reputation locally and consistently receives positive online reviews…
Where to Stay in Skipton
Just yards away from Skipton’s historic castle is one of our absolute favourites – The Bailey. More than your average town centre B&B, they offer three different accommodation types – a boutique Bed & Breakfast, a Shepherd’s Hut and a dog-friendly holiday cottage. Its central location means that all of Skipton’s most popular attractions, restaurants, shops and bars are all within easy walking distance. Despite being in such close proximity to the centre of town, the property benefits from having a secluded and rural feel to it. The owners are super friendly too! Pretty and peaceful, The Bailey is a wonderful choice for couples
“We stayed at The Bailey last week – what a great place to stay! The room was nice, bright, clean and overlooked the garden.
The bubbly, homemade biscuits & scones left in the room were a lovely touch. Breakfast was all freshly cooked with homemade bread, jams and granola. Definitely worth a visit if staying in Skipton.”
The Rendezvous Hotel
Skipton’s largest and most well-known hotel backs on to the Leeds-Liverpool canal. A popular choice for weddings and other functions, this spacious and modern hotel has its own leisure club and excellent canalside conservatory restaurant. Rendezvous is due to reopen for bookings on August 3rd and guests will be delighted by their new offering, Graceful Swan – a luxurious restaurant boat moored behind the hotel. As this hotel has plenty of onsite facilities, it is perfect for those longer stays.
“Could not fault it. Rooms spacious, clean and comfortable. Food excellent and plentiful. Staff friendly, efficient and go the extra mile. Great attention to detail. Location by the canal lovely. Walk into Skipton along canal tow path takes about 20 minutes and well worth doing. Wish the hotel well for the future.”
A Victorian Grade II listed building converted into a stylish and contemporary hotel with 25 rooms and a popular restaurant. Situated just across from Skipton train station and just a short walk from the town centre, Herriots provides the ideal base for those wishing to explore this glorious part of God’s Own Country. Elegantly decorated throughout and reasonably priced, this hotel is also one of Skipton’s most popular wedding venues. Their restaurant services great Yorkshire produce and always has some great dining deals available, making it a big hit with locals.
“We had a great stay at this hotel. Lovely rooms and excellent dinner. On check-in there was a problem in our room and the staff were fantastic in how they solved the issue. They were decisive, friendly and professional. I cannot speak highly enough of them. I highly recommend this hotel”
The Coach House
A luxury boutique hotel with 7 en-suite rooms, The Coach House is located in the centre of Skipton, above a popular and trendy wine bar. The rooms here are all individually decorated to a high standard. Owned and run by a local family with extensive experience within the hospitality industry, you can expect a high standard of customer service at The Coach House too. Rooms start at £90 per night. Begin your day with a traditional cooked Yorkshire breakfast and, in the evening, head across the road to their sister hotel and restaurant for a fabulous evening meal!
“Wonderful stay at lovely the Coach House. The standard room was large and beautifully furnished. We had planned to stay two nights but decided to leave a day early because of storm Ciara, prepared to forfeit our payment. Owner immediately offered to reimburse, much appreciated. Excellent family business deserves our support.”
Dalesgate Lodge is just a short walk away from the centre of Skipton, in one of the town’s most sought after residential areas. Built in 1885, this Victorian property has been beautifully decorated throughout and has 4 comfortable guest rooms. Owned by Daniel and Emma, Dalesgate Lodge is lovely little Bed and Breakfast which regularly receives excellent reviews for cleanliness, friendly customer service and perfectly cooked breakfasts made using local ingredients. If you’re looking for that perfect Yorkshire welcome and a quiet stay in a homely environment, this is the place for you!
“Stayed here for one night when visiting Skipton. What a lovely place to stay! So clean and pretty with lovely little touches…and the sheep everywhere were so cute! Five-minute walk into Skipton and free parking behind or near the hotel. Gorgeous breakfast and a welcoming host. Will definitely stay again.”
