Father’s Day is just around the corner and now that lockdown rules have been loosened, it will probably be a day of happy reunions. Those who are lucky enough to still have their fathers will no doubt be looking for ways in which to show their appreciation on Sunday, June 21st. Non-essential shops have been closed for a considerable length of time so I suspect most of you haven’t made your purchases yet. Many are due to reopen soon but, with COVID-19 still a considerable threat, some of us remain unable or reluctant to go out.
Thankfully, a number of Skipton businesses are continuing to offer local delivery of their products. Some of Skipton’s independent shops and even a local restaurant can deliver the perfect gift in time for Father’s Day. So, before you pick up a box of chocs and a crate of beer in the supermarket or head online to place an order with a big retailer, please take a look through this list of local gift ideas.
Our local independent businesses have suffered tremendously over the past few months and they’ve never needed us more. We know that for at least one of Skipton’s excellent independent businesses, the current pandemic has resulted in permanent closure. We sincerely hope that others don’t find themselves in similar situations.
Here, is our list of Father’s Day gift ideas from independent businesses in Skipton…
The Geek Side
The Geek Side in Skipton’s Craven Court Shopping Centre is a treasure trove of all things ‘geeky’. Stacked to the rafters with themed gifts and merchandise, you’re bound to find the ideal present for a Marvel, Harry Potter, Star Wars or gaming fan. We’ve listed just three of their great products but you’ll find many, many more excellent gift ideas on their website. At the moment, they’re offering a whopping 20% off all orders so do get in quick if you should see anything you like!
The Legend of Zelda Cartridge Mug – £12.99
As of yet, we’re not sure when this great local restaurant will reopen. They’re one of the newest additions to the Skipton restaurant scene but they’ve done marvellously well thus far. Owned and managed by husband and wife team, Bruce and Rebecca Elsworth, they’re known for their excellent hospitality and creative dishes, made using locally sourced ingredients.
During the pandemic, Elsworth Kitchen has been offering a menu of gourmet ready meals, prepared and delivered by talented chef, Bruce. We think a delivery from Elsworth Kitchen at Home would make the perfect Father’s Day gift. There’s much to choose from on the Elsworth at Home menu (including alcohol) and they’re even adding a special Platter Box to the menu which is perfect for garden get-togethers. There are limited delivery slots available for Father’s Day weekend so get your orders in early. Your food will be delivered on Friday and can be refrigerated until you’re ready to serve on Sunday.
Don’t forget, Elsworth Kitchen also offer gift vouchers and these would make a lovely present for someone eager to visit as soon as they reopen.

Cool Cards and Gifts
This wonderful little gift shop was one of the first of Skipton’s independents to shut their doors during the pandemic. Owned and managed by the very lovely Tina Botterill, they were forced to cease trading before lockdown as Tina and her husband needed to self-isolate. They stock a huge range of greetings cards and lots of lovely gifts. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, just get in touch and I’m sure they’ll find you something suitable.
Many of their cards are made locally and can be personalised by the artist – making them a keepsake rather than just a throwaway token of gratitude. They also stock vast numbers of slogan mugs which are just perfect for Father’s Day. We’ve listed a few gift ideas below but if you want to see more, join us on Facebook this Sunday for our Independent Skipton Online Market, where we’ll be showcasing some of their products. To place an order, either contact them via their Facebook page or email [email protected]
Slogan Mugs – £6.99
Father’s Day Cards
Situated right at the top of Skipton High Street, this old fashioned sweet shop has been trading in Skipton for a century. Family-run and incredibly friendly, they stock hundreds of different types of sweets. Since lockdown began, owner Jon Costello has been regularly updating the shop’s website and offering a free local delivery service as well as postal delivery. I’ve received a couple of orders from these guys already and the service has been superb. My mother was delighted with her delivery of Chocolate Bananas as apparently, they taste exactly the same as the ones she had as a child.
Choose from various gummy sweets, retro classics, old fashioned favourites and an extensive selection of liquorice-based confectionery. Recently, they’ve added some gifts such as hampers and a giant bags of pick n mix – perfect for a man with a sweet tooth.
Decade Boxes (50s, 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s) – £15
Mega Movie Night Pick n Mix (1kg) – £9.50
Discount Sports have been in Skipton for just over a year. They stock branded sportswear and footwear at heavily discounted prices. If the man in your life has a sporty side then head over to their brand new website for a browse. You’ll find products from top brands such as Adidas, Nike, Lacoste, Skechers, Kickers and more.
Ordering from these guys means you’ll pay considerably less than you would if you ordered directly from the brands themselves. Let’s face it, we could all do with saving a bit of money right now! Plus, it would be great if we could offer our support to a local business who didn’t even manage to finish their first year of trading.
Pro Canvas Studio
Skipton Market is due to reopen on June 10th. Pro Canvas Studio have been trading on the market for quite a while now. Owned and run by a lovely local couple, they have used their extensive experience within the printing industry to offer locals a “print while you wait” service. They can take any image from your smartphone and transfer it onto a canvas. With many families having spent considerable time apart recently, a canvas print of a family photo would make a wonderful Father’s Day gift.
To purchase your very own bespoke wall art, either head over to their stall when the market reopens or click through to their website HERE.
