Rowan Pickles is a phenomenally creative local man with an impressive range of skills. He has spent the majority of his working life building climbing walls and artificial cave systems. Since 2001 he has helped to build over 120 climbing walls including walls commissioned by businesses in Canary Wharf and Paris. He has also contributed to the building and decorating of military climbing walls in Norway and the Falklands. More recently, Rowan created a slab traverse wall for the children of Skipton’s Brougham Street Nursery.
More recently, Rowan has found new ways to put his unique variety of skills to good use and has launched his own business, selling bespoke artwork, sculptures, memorial stones and carved signs.
“I’ve been creative ever since I left school. I’m very adaptive so have learned numerous skills over the years, enabling me to offer a wide range of bespoke products and services including my memorial stones and carved house names plus commissioned paintings, wall murals and even tattoos.”
Rowan began sculpting just two years ago, after being gifted a one-off taster session with local stonemason, Chris Swales. Since then, he’s been chiselling out some wonderful pieces of art both for his own enjoyment and for those customers seeking something unique and personal.
Rowan says his work is inspired by astronomy, the cosmos, nature, his wife and his children. He hopes to get a regular stall on Skipton’s Artisan Market in the near future, but in the meantime, examples of his work can be found on his Facebook page – Grumpy Troll Arts. He can also be contacted via this page for commissions.
