The quintessentially British tradition of Afternoon Tea was introduced in the year 1840 by Ann, the seventh Duchess of Bedford. During the Victorian era, the upper classes would dine twice a day – at breakfast and at around 8pm at night. Anna would find herself getting hungry by late afternoon and began requesting tea and light snacks so she could eat in her rooms and keep hunger at bay. The Duchess began inviting other upper class ladies to join her and they quickly followed suit and began hosting Afternoon Tea in their own residences.
For a considerable number of years, Afternoon Tea was a dining concept strictly associated with the upper classes. Tiered platters of finger sandwiches and dainty cakes were served exclusively at high end hotels and they were only the wealthy could afford to indulge on a regular basis.
Fast forward to now and this British tradition has become widely available and accessible to all. Hotels, restaurants, cafes, pubs, bars and caterers all offer versions of Afternoon Tea which vary considerably in price and composition.
There are some superb eateries in and around Skipton offering their version of this much-loved British dining concept. Here are some of the most popular…
